The Lockheed Martin F-35B variant has special ability in short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL). This ability is very useful during warfare and jet fighter aircraft's requirements in runway length and landing base are limited. The single-engine of the F-35B able to retract downward so the thrust can be handle accordingly to provide certain force to lifts aircraft.

The picture shown the 33rd F-35 Series of US Marines during vertical landing training at Eglin Air Force Base. At the results, the US Marines' F-35B successfully conducted short takeoff and vertical landing missions.
